Ok, I definately need a new wireless router. It _really_ does not like working on a consistent basis. Unfortunately, I _cannot_ remember how to connect directly to my cable modem, so it's going to be a flaky WFH day. Fun.

And I have no idea when I'll have time/transportation to _get_ a new router...

There's a wire (CAT5 cable) going from the cable modem to the router. The end that goes to the router? Take it out. Plug that end into to your computer. Restart the router. Restart the computer if necessary.

Yeah, tried that. There appears to be something else I need to do.

(FWIW, I'm fairly computer savy. :)

You need to use a specific MAC address for your computer, else the cable DHCP server won't give you an address. If you can go into your router's configuration webpage, it should tell you what MAC address it uses for the WAN link.

Comcast? You need to power cycle the cable modem if you change the device it is talking to. Unplug for at least a minute, connect to your PC, turn on CM, turn on PC, hope. Some Comcast areas still lock you to a single MAC, so you may need to clone the MAC from your router to your PC for this to work.

Also, if transportation is your issue, circuit city has the wrt54g for $50 with free shipping. Mine is still going strong a few years later.

I usually get computer hardware via geeks.com newegg.com or similar online places. The selection is good, the toys arrive directly at my door, and life is good.

Either this weekend or, as mentioned above, online...they're just a commodity item now.

Still want to try it at my house?

I don't think there will be any additional data gained from trying it at your house, no.

And yeah, looking online right now.

I'm very happy with my (listed $50, but on sale when I got it) $35 Buffalo router, because I was able to quickly reflash it with DD-WRT (http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/index.php) and get a *boatload* of more functionality out of it. I can heartily recommend looking for any of the dozens of brands/models that can be reflashed with superior firmware.

Rats! But I'm glad you were able to pin down what the problem is and hopefully fix it soon. :)

If I'd been there another week I think I would've just bought the household a new one myself, for my own sanity. 8-)

I have thoughts about what that should be - get something with (draft) N!

I had fun with my wireless dropping out at every phone call until I figured out that the 2.4GHz cordless phone was nailing the 2.4GHz wifi. Replaced the phone with a 5.8GHz unit and all is better.
