I'm playing with music player/organizers (the kind of thing the iTunes player under Mac OS and Windows does with one's music collection) under Linux, and have come to the conclusion that Amarok makes me happy, other than the fact that it makes you add things to a playlist in order to be able to play them.

It also recommended last.fm, which is an interesting site (and Amarok interfaces with it, to an extent, which is nice).

I've been meaning to search for something similar as so far
I've mostly been rolling my own perl scripts and using gqmpeg.
I'm not entirely sure that I want something that drags
mysql in along with it... I'll have to go back and look
at it when I actually start looking, though.

Well, it would really depend on what you're looking for in a Linux music player/organizer. There were a bunch when I did a google search on it (needed to search separately on player and organizer, unfortunately), many of which were console based or purely text based, but many of which were graphical.

The Grumpy Editor's guide to music managers (http://lwn.net/Articles/160704/) might also be useful.
