Based on the... interesting reaction I just had to having to decide to not go to SF on the 4th of July weekend, I'm thinking that I need to find somewhere new, interesting, and local to visit. And soon. Because I think it's more that I need to _go_ somewhere than that I necessarily need time off.

Current thought is that I should finally get around to visiting the Cape, as I've never been. I'm not sure, however, when it tends to not be insanely crowded, nor where is best to be visiting, and all of that lovely stuff.

I'm also very much up to other suggestions. I basically have a very strong pull toward going somewhere different which is reasonably close and inexpensive.

Thoughts? Ideas? People who want to keep me company (in small numbers!)?

Hell, I might even be well served by attempting to get over my fear of NYC and starting to try visiting there. Not sure, though, as it's likely to be very high energy requiring for me, at least initially.

edit: In case it wasn't clear, while this was sparked by former plans for 4th of july, this is actually more general than that. And, oddly, I think I prefer peopled places over natural ones, since most natural places in the New England area are very similar to each other, and don't ping my 'new and different' interest. Oceanic beaches are a possible exception, since I haven't tended to do much with that in New England, due to cold weather.

Depending on where you decide to go, I may be up for keeping you company.

My parents will probably plan on heading up to the house in the Hamptons, is my default plan. You're welcome to join us there, if that's the case, which I can't yet guarantee. Hammock, pool, beach, lots of good wandering, kayaks, catamaran, quiet reading with good salty air, fishing, &c.

Hamptons: for 4th of July, you mean? (I note that this particular post, while sparked by a 4th of July plan, was more general than that)

And, if you do go, that sounds delightful. :)

Any suggestions on where to go in a more general sense?

Yes, I was thinking Hamptons for 4th of July. Though over the summer the family spends many weekends up there, and you'd be very welcome to join us for some random weekend if you prefer.

More general sense... hmm. I'm bad at localish thoughts. I know I want to go to Maine to eat lobster at some point. And to Providence to see Waterfire (http://www.waterfire.org/). NYC, of course. If you wanted to go even further south, I want to go camping on

Our lovely wetlands neighborhood. I should nag [livejournal.com profile] sinboy to go and take pictures of the salt marsh and the forest that are just down the street from our place. Not exaggerating. Across the road from us is a whole block of little separate houses with chimneys and yards and all. It's amazingly non-urban.

If you decide to try NYC, I'd be glad to play tour guide. I'm pretty good at low-energy NYC wandering. The touristy bits are horrible and exhausting, but I know lots of lovely bookstores and parks and odd little stores. *nodnod*

Depending on what you're looking for, there are some really nice places to go up north:

* White mountains. (NH, closer)
* Acadia national park. (Maine, farther)

Both have a bunch of nice hiking and views. There is plenty of low-stress hiking/walking in both, too.

Grew up in NH, white mountains area. Not my idea of 'new'.

Maine would be new, though... mostly. Is a thought. :)

(1) NYC is FUN!

(2) I occasionally drive to NYC. Let me know if you might want to ride-share sometime.

(3) Montreal is lovely, and is probably starting to think about thawing about now.

Once I get over my fear of it, maybe. ;)

Huh! Noted. That would help with the difficulties I have with traveling to unfamiliar places alone.

Montreal is lovely, and is probably starting to think about thawing about now.

Never been! Good point. Shall have to contemplate that.
