My mom has said for as long as I can remember that the higher rates are almost certainly because people who are on the spectrum get along better with and are more likely to have children with other people on the spectrum. I suspect that the 'working together' thing is only one of the many factors, since people can meet through _lots_ of different avenues at this point, working together being only one of them.

Shared interests are certainly one of the best ways to meet people that one likes, and is probably pretty likely to have the same effect. So is meeting people through online social groups, I think.
