[silly, weird] Marshmallows!

Does anyone else sometimes toast marshmallows over the stove or a candle?

And do you have patience in your toasting, or do you take the tack of making them burnt to a crisp on the outside because you like watching the flaming marshmallow? (and hey, crispy on the outside and smooshy in the middle is fun, too)

[identity profile] jodawi.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
sometimes over a stove; rarely have some

flaming.

theory: those who have flaming marshmallows also crunch on the candy tht others might suck.

[identity profile] wispfox.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I do, in fact, tend to crunch on candy intended for sucking. :)

The only marshmallow I will light afire in my home are those little bunny marshmallows you get around easter.

I do really really like microwave smores.. though it feels sacriligous to say so.

[identity profile] wispfox.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Peeps? Or were peeps the chicks? I think those were the chicks, nevermind.

What _are_ the bunny versions called?

There are microwave s'mores?! I didn't even know they existed.

[identity profile] anklesnake.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah! Peeps! Ok, it's been too long since I've toasted an edible representation of a cute animal. Yes, I'm definitely thinking of peeps.

As far as the microwave smores go - I don't really remember how to make them.. I think you microwave the marshmallow between the crackers and then put the chocolate on afterwards. Not sure. Certainly worth experimenting with!

[identity profile] bridgetester.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
No, you can do the chocolate at the same time. You have to be careful though, or else the marshmallows get huge.

bunnies vs. peeps

You can, in fact, get bunny marshmallows AND peeps at Easter. They are two different things. And both incredibly yummy. *grin*

dueling peeps

[identity profile] sunstealer.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
If you put toothpicks in peeps and then microwave them, they'll swordfight until they explode. Sort of sugary turkey-dance of death.

Sort of sugary turkey-dance of death.

*bursts out laughing*

Completely aside from the amusing mental picture the first part gave, this is just... wonderful!

[identity profile] regyt.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep! I've even toasted marshmallows over a menorah! (That pissed off my mother.)

I am very patient with the getting the perfect golden-brown gooey inside.

[identity profile] wispfox.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I've even toasted marshmallows over a menorah!

*gigglefit* Oh, my. I adore you, and am reminded of this fact yet again. :)

Patience: I just like the fire too much, I think. Something about a flaming marshmallow delights me greatly!

[identity profile] bridgetester.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
(Silly mother)

Perfectionist, eh? :)

[identity profile] regyt.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, no, no perfectionist streak here at all.... ^^;;;

(I lie. Oh yes.)

I think [livejournal.com profile] lawnrrd's new baby (http://www.livejournal.com/users/lawnrrd/165579.html) can CHEW THROUGH BONE!

[identity profile] wispfox.livejournal.com 2004-11-02 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That'd be one hell of a scary baby, to chew through bone!

*hides*

Teeth. Marrow.

*swoons*

Teeeeeeth. :)

[identity profile] phaedra-lari.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I am patient over a fire and like to get them gently browned just so and perfecly melty inside, but find I lack the knack of getting them to come out right over a gas stove. And I don't like getting marshmallow drips into my stove either.

Candle flame huh? Haven't tried that.

[identity profile] dragontdc.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't. Parrafin is a petroleum product, and the smoke is accordingly nasty. If you must toast over a candle, use beeswax candles.

[identity profile] uberjay.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I tend to be pretty patient, and often will roast over hot coals -- this results in the best browning, IMHO :)

I've never tried over a candle, though. Perhaps I should?

Often I just end up staring at/playing with the fire though. I like fire a lot.

Perhaps you might like [livejournal.com profile] pyronymphomania then.

[identity profile] wispfox.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Oh... really?

I shall have to remember to ping you the next time there is firespinning happening that I know about. :)

[identity profile] uberjay.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely!

[identity profile] mactavish.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I've toasted them over stoves, but it's not the same for me. I don't love marshmallows, they're more like a ritual, and that ritual goes with campfire or winter fireplaces.

I'll eat them if they've burned, but I prefer them evenly toasted all over.

[identity profile] wispfox.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't play with marshmallows _often_, mind. But every so often I want to eat insanely sweet food that I just finished burning over an open flame. And I don't generally have a campfire or fireplace handy! :)

I don’t roast marshmallows over a stove or candle, but that’s only because (a) I never have marshmallows in the house, and (b) it never occurs to me. I encounter marshmallows (very enthusiastically!) when other people bring them to campfires.

I have patience in my toasting, but I like them to very slowly turn black and crunchy, and then finally, finally catch fire. As with beef so with marshmallows I am a firm believer in the carbonization of food.

And to comment on another comment, I’m more the sort of person who sucks on candy than crunches it.

[identity profile] ian-gunn.livejournal.com 2004-10-28 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
We had a fireplace in the house we just sold. Frequent marshmallow toasting happened during the winter. :) No fireplace in the new house, but a wood stove is in our future. I once toasted over a gas stove when I had a craving but a very rare occurrence. I tried over a candle once as an experiment but is was too slow.

If I'm feeling patient I like to toast them to a nice even golden brown to the point it almost falls off the stick. That is the best. I'll often alternate with letting them burn and get crunchy on the outside and chewy in the middle. If I'm not in a patient mood I'll skip straight to burn mode.

The candy analogy sort of follows. I'll frequently suck on them for awhile then chew the remainder up. Cinnamon Altoids being a frequent target.

[identity profile] bridgetester.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I watch them go foooom in the microwave (to make smores)

Re: marshmallows

[identity profile] wolfieboy.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I have toasted them in the past. If I have someone to talk to, I can be patient and get them to be a nice golden brown. Otherwise, I just get them charred and melty. I've used candles a few times but I've used the fireplace more often. One time I was impatient and used a plumber's torch. Fwoosh!

Re: marshmallows

[identity profile] wispfox.livejournal.com 2004-10-29 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
plumber's torch. Wow. And I thought candles and stoves were weird! *impressed*

Fwooosh, indeed!

[identity profile] wolfieboy.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
I've somehow gotten the reputation of overdoing things. I'm not sure where that comes from.

This reminds me of the guy who used liquid oxygen to start a charcoal barbeque.

If you're into flaming marshmallows, a match works just as well.... ;-)

Not as much fun, though! :)
