regyt posted about showing Princess Bride to her youngest brother. This sparked a poll in my head, 'cause my reply was 'Wait, there are people who _don't_ interpret "As you wish" as "I love you"?!'

Good thing that's not a commonly used phrase, or I'd be _really_ confused. ;)

If the context is wrong, I'm sure I'll realize that's not what was meant, but I'm nearly certain that that _is_ how I'd take it if anyone ever said it to me. No one has, so this is all theoretical. :)

On an unrelated note, I think someone could say swiss cheese and communicate I love you, if they said it just so. :)

I think Swiss is more of a "let's be friends" kind of cheese signal. But Gouda on the other hand...watch out!

I checked "Yes" to both, but I will say that it depends on context.

Then again, the sincerity of "I love you" depends on context. I never did place much store by the Oriental bar girls who'd plop themselves in my lap and say, "You number one American GI I love you no shit buy me drinkee?"

It's funny - If I feel a need to say something with that sentiment, I will say it in Spanish (the only other language I know well), or find other words. That's how strongly I seem to associate them!

To me, "As you wish" has overtones of co-dependency. Hearing it often would disturb me. I Can see how it would be an act of love for some to say that, but I can also see how it could be a sign of not being able to stand up for one's own best interests.

See, I _don't_ hear that phrase - that specific phrase - in terms of it's original meaning. So I had not thought of that. And were someone to say it to me, I'm fairly sure I would hear it as 'I love you', and not as them doing something because I want it. So... interesting.
