Kinda neat. Taking a few moments from busy, busy day at work... (found on
firecat's journal)
Age: 26
Where did you grow up: until age 8, Williamsport, PA; age 8-17, Laconia, NH. Both USA.
WHAT DO YOU CALL:
1. A body of water, smaller than a river, contained within relatively narrow banks?
Brook, creek, stream (depends on the size)
2. The thing you push around the grocery store?
shopping cart
3. A metal container to carry a meal in?
lunchbox
4. The thing that you cook bacon and eggs in?
frying pan.
5. The piece of furniture that seats three people?
sofa, couch. I think I use the latter more often.
6. The device on the outside of the house that carries rain off the roof?
gutter, downspout
7. The covered area outside a house where people sit in the evening?
porch, but it could be a gazebo (sp?) if it's separate from the house.
8. Carbonated, sweetened, non-alcoholic beverages?
soda, pop (I tend to use the former)
9. A flat, round breakfast food served with syrup?
pancake (and not just *any* syrup, either! Real maple syrup!)
10. A long sandwich designed to be a whole meal in itself?
sub, hogie, there's another one that's slipping my mind... I think I use the former more often, since people in New England tend to have no idea what the latter is. I learned the latter first, though.
11. The piece of clothing worn by men at the beach?
Swim suit? Or do you mean swimming trunks? I don't know which one I use more... probably the former.
12. Shoes worn for sports?
sneakers, sometimes cleats. Depends on the sport. Hell, I could also include ice skates and ski boots...
13. Putting a room in order?
Cleaning up; sometimes, tidying up.
14. A flying insect that glows in the dark?
Lightning bug, firefly. I think I learned the first one, first.
15. The little insect that curls up into a ball?
Um... I think it's a caterpillar, but am not entirely sure.
16. The children's playground equipment where one kid sits on one side and goes up while the other sits on the other side and goes down?
teter-totter, see-saw. I think the latter is what I am more likely to use.
17. How do you eat your pizza?
Depends on my current mental state, and how greasy it is.
Sometimes, I use a knife and fork. Sometimes, I bend it in half, and let some grease drip off, then eat it, starting at the tip. Sometimes, I just pick it up and eat it, but after blotting a bit of the grease off with a napkin.
Yes, I'm weird.
18. What's it called when private citizens put up signs and sell their used stuff?
Yard sale, garage sale (depends on where it's being held).
19. What's the evening meal?
supper. Or dinner. I think I decided that dinner happened later than supper - so if it's around5, it's supper; if it's after 7, it's dinner.
20. The thing under a house where the furnace and perhaps a rec room are?
Basement.
An unusually heavy rain which does not last long.
Downpour. Or, depending on my current mood, 'real rain'. Especially if there's thunder and lighting involved!
A window covering on rollers that pulls down.
Shade. Or window shade.
A new, limited access, multi-lane road.
highway? Freeway? interstate? Parkway? Depends on the road...
Heavy garments worn for work.
Overalls.
Hey! Why did no one ask about the name of the circle in a road which often was used to replace traffic lights (or, stop lights!) when there are too many different directions one can go?
Rotary, traffic circle, roundabout.
