So THAT'S why, after getting the bugs out of the first few hybrid systems in small, highly efficient cars (Honda Insight, Toyota Prius, etc.), the most common implementation of hybrid systems is not in the small economy car, but in the larger SUVs and cars. Not only does it bring their sometimes abyssmal gas mileage up a few MPG, it actually saves more gas than offering a hybrid Civic as opposed to a traditional gas one (though both are available).
