A powerful piece. I fwded this to J (in our D&D group), whom I think will find it very interesting, too.
Of course, not having experienced this personally, and also vehemently not caring to conform to norms of any kind, I find myself feeling a little annoyed at this person for being this annoyed about it. I don't conform to 'geek' stereotypes (except when, y'know, that's who I am anyway), and shed the censure I get from other geeks for not doing this -- but then, they tend to be less pushy than, say, an over the top drama queen whose identity is fundamentally based on being a visible, proselytizing member of a particular culture.
So...yeah. I'm glad they wrote this, because it needs to be said.
This kind of thing is why I gave up long ago trying to find kindred spirits based on things like sexuality (I happen to accidentally find an inordinate number of kindred spirits who do have a non-standard sexuality, but very few of them in a group _based_ on it). It rarely worked out, and generally frustrated the hell out of me. I'm far too shy to wander around being visible and proselytizing. Similar to why I have trouble with goth groups, actually.
So me, I identify with that post. Add in a bit of 'oh no, bi people are evil' from both sides of the theoretical fence, and I gave up on sexuality-based groups years ago. I am not a myth, dammit! And being myself does not propagate irritating assumptions any more or less than _not_ being myself would. Ok, perhaps less. Perhaps.
