I hate you, inexplicably non-functional wireless cards!

(both my laptop and the work laptop have evil, evil, inexplicably non-functional wireless. And they _worked_ earlier in the week! At least wired works, but I _need to be testing_ the work laptop's wireless. Fucker. At least the network is friendly to [livejournal.com profile] jasra & my laptop is happy enough with the wired connection)

*has hatred* *has no patience for anything today*

My music is pissing me off, so now I'm listening to Radio Paradise. But that is pissing me off too. Perhaps no music while [livejournal.com profile] jasra is out of the room anyway. But it's too quiet without it. Damned useless stimulus input desires signals!

Even canceled my massage tonight. No patience. None. *growls & bites things*

It is bad to have no patience when one's job is testing things, because they usually break...

Also, still no love for social interaction. Even if being petted is a goodness (I need a squishing machine!). At least [livejournal.com profile] jasra is used to me, so our date night last night was decent.

Also, self? Stop with the caffeine. Yes, upper. But shaky (which I already get when over-stimmed). And probably not great for sleeping, even if you do have it first thing in the morning.

Is your router a WRT54G linksys (or something like that)? I've had problems with my wireless cutting out between my macintosh and that thing; it was really frustrating. For some reason that I haven't speculated about, killing the weather dashboard widget and rebooting the router seemed to fix it.

(Talk about shots in the dark. But if replacing the router, which I think you've done, isn't fixing it, maybe shots in the dark are the right thing).

Um... it's a WRT54GL, yes. With updated firmware.

It's _not even managing to connect_. It tries and fails twice every time I tell it to try.

Yesterday, getting rid of the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfigurati
on/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist file made it happy (online search for a fix resulted in this). Today it does not. I guess I try rebooting after work. Graa.

But why would the work laptop be failing?!

The hell. *cranky*

I presume the work laptop is not a macintosh?

But yes; connection attempt failures were the problem I had. I *think* when I did that, it screwed over the router for the other machines in the house as well, but it was a while ago. Updated firmware didn't help, and I won't even tell you what I think of Linksys customer support. There is some data on the web about this, but I don't have an easy pointer handy.

You might want to try disabling the weather widget on the mac and rebooting the router just for the hell of it. Yes, it's magical. But there's no reason not to set the switch to "More magic".

I don't use the weather widget. Found a fix that _might_ make it work better (I'm connected again). So. Confused.

And no, work is linux.

My apologies if I'm beating a dead horse, but you don't need to use the weather widgets for it to mess you up. The dashboard and some default widgets (including weather) come enabled from the factory, so they're always running whether you use them or not. You need to explicitly disable it (I speak for Tiger; the dashboard didn't exist in panther, and I don't know anything about leapord).

Ah. Understood. Disabled. Widget are sneaky & evil.

We could find something else to watch on Tivo tonight and then be snuggly again since we both have no plans this evening.

And stupid wireless. It should be nice to you. You gave it a good home.

Condolences on the wireless wonkiness.

If it's any consolation, your post finally got me off my butt to investigate a long-standing issue with my router, where it'd just stop responding to anything if there was too much traffic thrown at it (like opening 3-5 YouTube videos in quick succession, or running BitTorrent for extended periods). Of course, the apparent fix seems to be to chuck it and replace it... but *shrug*

And the new one is both BitTorrent certified and supports 802.11n. :)

Wish I could actually help, but all I can do is offer a GIP.
