Feb. 5th, 2006 05:50 pmI _so_ miss living in a place where I can feasibly walk everywhere I tend to want to go (or, in this case, have reasonable transit options if walking isn't as feasible). The last place this was possible at the same time as not having scary big city problems for me (some of which is crowdedness, some of which is air quality, some of which is cleanliness) was while living on campus at UNH.
Yes, I had initial scary city reaction, but I suspect that was as much the newness and jet lag as anything else.
My legs are _loving_ the amount of walking I've been doing, and I've been loving the amount of sunlight. Sure, there have been times that I've had too much clothing on and was uncomfortable, but those were relatively rare. And that seems to be as much about adjusting to what to expect from the weather as anything else (morning temperatures do _NOT_ have much to do with midday/afternoon temperatures, so far).
And, today is the first day that I've not been utterly exhausted at 4pm (midnight, EST). Probably largely due to lots of sunlight yesterday and today. Only real annoyance as far as the sunlight is the amount of care I need to take in order to not burn myself. I do _not_ have 'sunscreen any time I go outside' habits. Hell, I barely have 'sunscreen if I intend to be sitting in the sun for an hour or more' habits. And I slept until 7:45a, this morning (as vs 5:30, 2am, previous nights). Unfortunately, there was someone having a loud party from 11:30-midnight last night, which woke me up. This is an especially interesting experience when one considers that I'd taken melatonin ~2 hours earlier, so was _really_ _really_ groggy.
I'm noticing that I have a constant background process running, analyzing the accents around me (since, now, I have sufficient others to compare with, so that it's not just 'this person sounds like this'), and that I start to think that American accents sound strange. This is the first step toward me starting to unintentionally modify my accent according to those around me. Now, we'll just see if I start thinking my own accent is wrong (I have, ever, but it's not required for me to inadvertantly start modifying to use the accent around me). :)
Indeed. As I suspected, I very much like it here. Well, at least in high summer. ;)
Have been having an annoying problem with heartburn since the plane ride here, annoyingly. Not sure what's up with that, though. Hoping the dairy in the yogurt I'm eating will help...
Hmm. I begin to feel sleepy. Well, two hours later than yesterday, and nowhere near painful exhaustion!
Mmm. Parks and nifty people and all sorta of new and interesting things to look at. One of the pigeon-type birds near here sounds like a cross between a pigeon and a rooster (the cadance and notes sound rooster-ish, but soft hooting, like a pigeon). 'Tis quite odd!
