It's fascinating needing to educate people that no, I _don't_ have to wear shoes where I work (at least not if people are saying so because they think there's OSHA regulations about it. If someone implements actual rules about it, I'd have to, unfortunately).

Bare Feet and OSHA

I've gotten progressive bolder about not wearing shoes at work over the past few years. I think the higherups recognize that when I'm meeting with someone outside the department, or a vendor, or anyone who needs to be professionally impressed, that I can be trusted to dress customarily, and beyond that, they leave me alone, apart from occasional comments about my bare feet when it's really cold outside.

We have a new project manager who came from the flight simulator industry (very blue-collar, very industrial atmosphere even among the IT workers), and the first time he saw me walking down the hall barefoot he laughed, honestly amused. He then got serious and wondered about OSHA regulations. Indignantly, I said "what are you talking about, is this a fucking factory floor or something?" That seemed to work, because he dropped it and has never mentioned it again.

I swear, I couldn't keep my sanity in this job if I could be physically comfortable.

Thanks for the pointer to the regulations, though.

Welcome. You can also go to OSHA's website (linked to repeatedly on the site I mentioned), and do a search there. There's also an interesting reply to a letter they apparently received:

Hey! That's great! I usually walk around in sock feet (otherwise, I get cold toes) and I get a lot of looks. I will now do it with pride. :)

Well, I need to wear shoes in the lab, and I'm the sort of person who randomly alternates between lab stuff and desk stuff, so I just wear shoes all the time. But that makes me pleased - I worked in a place back when I was in college where the head secretary got all squicked about me going barefoot. I wish I'd known back then that there were no regulations about wearing shoes. . .

shoes in lab: yep, one of those places where it's necessary, unfortunately.

But yay for going barefoot previously! :)

(Note to self: I need an icon of my feet. Because I have toes.)

I hate wearing shoes, even when I'm at work. Okay, especially when I'm at work. Going barefoot around my office isn't really an option because we have hardwood floors that are in very bad shape and not friendly to bare feet. So I wear Birkenstock sandals that slip off easily and take them off the instant I'm back at my desk. Some people give me weird looks when they come in and notice me barefoot in my chair, but it's just too comfy not to!

Having toes is a perfect reason. In fact, I have toes, _TOO_!

Yes. Shoes are silly, except if it's cold or something.
