It's only taken me three million years to look at this, but...

Friend Cluster Viewer, found on [livejournal.com profile] entrochan's journal (also apparently created for her). (requires Java)

I appear to have two overlapping clusters. Boston, and not-Boston (and some outliers). I spent _way_ too much time just _staring_ at it.

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say it was created *for* me. Inspired by me is more like it.

It's definitely stareworthy!

Neat. I still like TouchGraph better though, because the arrangement + zooming. A few groups were place outside the applet area...

Ha. You're just trying to get me back for that movie you couldn't load. Firefox just gives me an unsupported class version error when trying to load that.

Interoperability! Whee!

Try again. I couldn't get it to load the first time with Firefox, but the second worked.

I've tried with all four of the browsers I have (Firefox, Mozilla, Safari and even *shudder* IE), and none of them work. I get the same error with all of them. :(

No joy with Firefox at all, but Safari was able to load it. Interesting.

I seem to have FOUR clusters... one from the old U of I crowd, one of the people I know who are all joined together by IMSA-ness, one of psych-chicks that I know through Kate, and one of my Boston connections via [livejournal.com profile] signsoflife.

Fascinating!

I note that I was unable to get it to work under Linux (of course, I didn't try very hard).

It doesn't work when I do it :( I get a Java error.

Sad!

I'm not sure what OS you're using, but if you're using Windows, [livejournal.com profile] bridgetester pointed out the TouchGraph LiveJournal Browser (http://www.touchgraph.com/TG_LJ_Browser.html). It's sorta similar, and for people with large friends lists, probably more useful (and also very stare-worthy!).

Heh, no. I'm on a Macintosh.

It's Java though, so twill run on a Mac. I should know.

Well, _that's_ not very friendly of it! (Of course, it appears to not handle large friends lists very well)

If you've not already seen it, and are using Windows (damned if I can remember what you use for an OS), [livejournal.com profile] bridgetester pointed at the TouchGraph LiveJournal Browser (http://www.touchgraph.com/TG_LJ_Browser.html). It's slightly different, but I found it similarly stare-worthy (even if it _did_ make me run Windows to play with it! But then, I couldn't get the tool I mentioned in this post to run in Linux, either).

For the people whose browsers aren't working with the link, try TouchGraph LiveJournal Browser (http://www.touchgraph.com/TG_LJ_Browser.html) instead. Takes more time to load, but it isn't particularly crashy.

Is that Windows-only?

Java. Twill run on nearly anything with up-to-date Java software.

Hmm.

I thought I remembered 'exe' being involved, but apparently not. I _do_ know that I couldn't get it to run on my Linux box, but I may have gotten bored with fiddling with it to get it to work.

There's a bat file for a windows launcher, but it's not necessary. Try double-clicking the TG_LJ_Browser.jar file instead, if you feel like the trouble of downloading (http://www.touchgraph.com/TGLJB15.zip) it again? *curious*

From: [identity profile] wispfox.livejournal.com
Um...

It's actually fairly unusual for double-clicking to work in Linux. And, as I'm not sure what it's unhappy about, I can't figure it out. I _have_ Java, but damned if my browser believes me. Ah, well.

From: [identity profile] bridgetester.livejournal.com
*facepalm at doubleclicking* I'm still used to the BSD embedded within MacOS X...

This should work when typed in a terminal window:

java -cp TG_LJ_Browser.jar:nanoxml-2.1.1.jar:BrowserLauncher.jar com.touchgraph.googlebrowser.TGGoogleBrowser

I had one big huge pulsating mass, a small outlying group of HomeofPoi firespinny people, and a few people no one reads but me.

Now I want my entire flist to coalesce into an amorphous mass of pulsating protoplasm, pronto!

I realize that this would cause me to be involved in said mass, but the _idea_ is very stare-worthy. *staaaares*

Yeah, mine does that too on a screen that small. There are a few clusters, but they're overwhelmed by the giant polygeek one.
