I found Tokyo to be less scary than NYC, and I like NYC. I recall very little Bad People vibe, even in the (not nearly as common as I had expected) very crowded areas, such as train stations during rush hour. People in general were very kind and helpful, even when they couldn't speak much English. There's a lot to giggle about and admire there, too, such as the very effective air conditioning in the trains (with aduible speaker systems!), and little dried squid that are sold as snack foods for kids, and how they wrap and present tiny $2 gelatinous desserts with the care we'd reserve for jewelry, and yummy 300ml grapefruit sodas, and...
