I tend to forget to ask about such things for publicly readable posts, because they _are_ publicly readable.

My default operating criteria for my own journal is that anything publicly readable is publicly linkable. For other people's journals, I'll assume any humourous links are publicly linkable and ask about other stuff. I find this policy leads to the least amount of angst from all concerned :)

I have the same for other people's journals, also, unless I have reason to think otherwise, or something which feels _really_ personal is being mentioned. As of yet, it's not been a problem, but if it were, it'd be difficult for me to really remember (unless I manage to special case a particular person's journal).
