I'm beginning to wonder how many of the people I know would not be comfortable in clothing-optional locations. So... Poll!

[Poll #378232]

[edit]

I forgot an option! If your answer is 'depends', or similar, explain in comments? (mine is depends, even)

[editedit]

I'm amused by how many of you presumed that clothing-optional location meant that you were not dressed. That's where the 'optional' part comes in. :)

I'm generally quite comfortable, unless I'm around other people who are a) ogling me like a sex object and/or b) a significant proportion of the people there are obviously fairly self-conscious and/or uncomfortable themselves.

But if other people are relaxed and uncreepy, then I'm very comfy :)

That describes me, as well. Well, unless I'm cold. Then I stay clothed!

Me too, with the cold. Also, I don't always like the feeling of certain textures and surfaces against my bare skin, so sometimes I remain clothed or perhaps topless for that reason.

*nods* Sometimes I stay bottomed for that reason, especially when it's hot. Some chairs are just really bad against bare skin.

Also, me, too. Some textures are _nasty_.

Generally, however, floors are fine. Some carpeting is not, though...

My answer is totally comfortable, _if_ I have a reasonable amount of reason to believe that no one is going to take it the wrong way.

Setting is very important. I've been a number of times (esp. when I was married) to a local nudist resort, plus hot tubbing at Retrohaven. Once you (and those you're with) get past nudity does NOT equal sex, there shouldn't be a problem.

exactly, I hate dealing with people on the hunt for the hot bi babe, I've had to deal with those before and they just give me the creeps.

Yes. Me, too.

Yup, I agree with that 100%.

-My "slightly uncomfortable" answer mostly boils down to not being entirely comfortable with my looks, and a fear of situationally inappropriate erection. However, via hot tub parties and the like, I'm getting more relaxed about it.

Does this answer change if there is no implication of you having no clothing?

Date: 2004-11-04 04:05 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] woodwardiocom.livejournal.com
-I have no problems with other people being naked. (Completely unexpected nudity will surprise me for a second, and I'm more comfortable around naked women than naked men, but those are minor matters of degree.)

*nods* Ok. That's actually the question I was intending to ask, although I apparently didn't ask it very well. :)

Depends -- there are people and places it's totally comfortable, and others of both where it's not. My level of comfort with the people around is probably key.

That makes sense to me. I figured most 'depends' answers would be things like this.

You might've guessed my answer already.

As long as people aren't going to freak out by me being unclothed, I want to be unclothed. Clothes are icky.

Depends on the people around. In other news, it hasn't happened except around SO's.

Hmm!

I feel the need to inform you that my home is clothing-optional. ;) (it's also fairly chilly in the winter, though, so I tend to remain clothed that time of year)

The scale was sorta funny; part of me equivalenced "Totally comfortable" and "Don't care", and "Semi-comfortable" and "slightly uncomfortable". But I didn't htink that's what you were trying to get at, so I imagined a couple of levels more comfortable than "don't care" and took the first :-}.

It does matter to me that the people I'm around are comfortable with it, but given that, I have a slight preference for nudity. I may be partially a nudist, not in a way that I go looking for nude resorts & etc (it just doesn't matter that much), but in a way that I enjoy contexts where I don't need to have clothes on. But as I get older I'm getting more cold sensitive, so those potential contexts are getting fewer.

This more or less describes me - I prefer lack of clothing unless I'm cold.

And, yes, weird scale. I couldn't find a better way of putting things, though. :)

Depends! Are we talking me clothed in a clothing-optional location or me unclothed there? If I'm clothed, I don't care. Might not even notice, depending. My comfort level with my nudity, however, shifts drastically depending on who is around and what they're wearing. I have no sense of modesty, but I do have some body insecurity.

Noted. Well, I can assure you that I am unlikely to ever try to convince anyone to remove clothing if they don't want to, clothing-optional place or not. That's why it's _optional_, see. :)

I think, for me, it would depend upon who was there. There are people who I may not be comfortable around if we were in a clothing-optional location.

I was going to say "I don't know!" but then I realized I've been skinny dipping a bunch of times and was totally comfortable. However, that was with people I mostly knew and trusted. Hm. Noting that I didn't know all of them, I think for me this is one of those cases where I will tell you that I don't know or am uncomfortable, and in practice not be uncomfortable. I don't fully understand how this is working for me.

Good question!

i only say semi comfortable because i don't want to commit to totally comfortable, because there are situations that would make me uncomfortable. I did live on a clothing optional hall at MIT and wander around half naked.

*nods* I suspect there are situations that would make most of the people who answered 'totally comfortable' uncomfortable. But that's not really (in my case, at least) because of the lack of clothing, but because of other people's reactions to it?

if i'm around people that i trust, i am totally comfortable. however, i also get pretty comfortable pretty fast in new nudity situations. it really depends on how the other people are. i don't like being ogled, i don't mind appreciative looks, or the occasional appreciative comment, but i'd rather talk about art or food or something than about my looks, cuz my looks are a really fucking boring topic because they are *mine* and there's not much that i can do about them for good or for ill -- so......

babble.

That is _totally_ where I am, as well. Clothed or not, actually.

I'm not very useful.  It infinitely depends on context.  Very comfy at home, somewhat at safe-type places (like your place), don't care if others choose to, not entirely comfortable at parties and such, very not comfy at places where I don't like the person(s).

If your answer is 'depends'

If you prefer to be wearing Depends than going completely nude? I dunno, I find wearing adult diapers kinda embarassing.

*drum sting*

Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week...

I'm fairly comfortable being without clothing (climate permitting) around friends who I know aren't bugged by it. Less comfortable with strangers.
