I did just take a look at the legislation in question, here, sections 3032 and 3033. I am disgusted and appalled, and just sent mail to my Representative.

Information on how to do that is in this, at Obsidian Wings, or you can just go to Write your Representatives.

[edit] I found the initial post because of [livejournal.com profile] geekchick pointing to it.

[edit edit] In very very short, the piece of legislation is trying to make it legal for people accused of terrorism to be exported to countries known to use torture.

wow. the u.s. shouldn't be supporting torture anyway, and the recent record of suspected terrorists turning out to be completely innocent bodes particularly ill for the idea.

your post's a bit vague, though. :) (you never mention what you're disgusted and appalled by, other than the link). but good on you for writing, and for passing it on.

I'm vague because my brain hurts. :)

*nod* It is all the little things like this that slip in during times of crisis that bother me. You'd think we'd learn from history to be true to our ethical foundation rather then give in to the expedient "solutions". Little things like the Japanese American internment camps during WWII should have taught us this lesson.

I wrote to my congressman too. Crossing my fingers that they will remove that section. Here is to hoping that the Republicans will think they will catch to much flack during an election year to get away with this. Or, does it actually help them seem more "tough on terrorist" to have those provisions?
