Jul. 11th, 2004 12:39 amThere were a couple things that popped into my head while preparing for sleep, and they told me to post them.
I do not like discussions where effectively what is being said is 'you should think this because' or 'you think this and'. I much prefer 'I think this, and this is why".
Possibly related, I don't like discussions in which one person has to be right. It's why I avoid political, religious, and similar types of discussions. They do _not_ make me happy, because in my mind there _is_ no 'right'.

And do I think that whilst there is no 'right', there is often 'less wrong', but never mind: I shall not engage in non-consensual political discussion with you!

I _think_ it's because being told that I should think something, or that I _do_ think something, especially if by someone I don't know, is the fastest way to make me not _want_ to know them. :)

True. I agree with that, but the problem is that, as with many things, people's idea of what _is_ 'less wrong' varies. Sometimes wildly.

I was terribly upset, instead of dismissive (within myself), probably a Mistake. it's easy to see others may well be, too. After all, it's ferociously insulting, however it's meant.

*I* think that's a healthy reaction!

Indeed, as could be expected. Oftimes, though, there is recourse to Actual Evidence in the Material World, or Logic :-),
a situation where folks' failure of belief is their problem!
I give the benefit of the doubt to one of the individuals who mind-read me, but not the other. My opinion of zir sank, though. As an alt.polyite, zie should know better!

Yes. It is. Absolutely, it is.

Oh, ditto. But one it took me a while to get to and stay in without feeling like it was somehow not giving people enough chances. *shakes head* I was _way_ too forgiving of others (and not nearly enough of myself). I'm much better than I was, now. :)

'Should', yes. But hardly a safe assumption, alt.polyites being human, too. :)

Date: 2004-07-12 09:41 pm (UTC)I give people not from downunder who only see me (and others) from downunder in text a good bit of leeway. It has been interesting to get their take on this.
