Why would someone voluntarily taste something that another person has told them is nasty?

People are _strange_...

To see if it's really as bad as the first person is saying it is. I have been the person whose nasty food was tasted, on more than one occasion.

Huh. OK, I can see this. Perhaps if the reason for the nasty isn't know, for example?

*blinks* I have no idea what that is, and now I won't be trying it. ;)

This is why I can never bring myself to buy those Harry Potter jellybeans. 'Cuz I know with a lot of them, I'm going to go "YUCK!!!".

The dirt and the grass ones aren't bad. I don't think I ever ended up trying any of the others, though. :)

With my luck, I'd end up with poop or something...

I don't think that one exists. :) And, IIRC, they are appropriately labeled using an identification guide. Which is why I know what I've tried!

Because... (luckily) we all have different tastes. :>

No...

I mean in terms of 'ew! This is nasty! Try it!'

Rather than 'I don't like this, but you might, try it!'

I still stand by what I say.

For example I *LOVE* durian (a Thai fruit), I enjoy eating it a great bit, and there are people who will say it is the absolute most evil vile tasting thing they've ever had...

Huh!

OK. I've heard of durian fruit, so I do actually know what you mean about most people saying it's horrible. Never tried it.

Although, I thought it was supposed to be the smell that was the truly nasty part, not the taste?

Durian is wonderful but I'm not allowed to have any in the house. :)

The smell is a bit much but the taste is divine. [livejournal.com profile] cindygerb on the other hand can't stand the smell _or_ the taste...

People also lie. I can't get anyone at work to eat Vegemite because BAD PEOPLE have said it tastes nasty.

Heh! I _know_ someone tried it at one point. The reaction after taking a bite was amusing. :)

(me, I smelled it, and will never actually _eat_ it)

People are weird.

Once upon a time, my partner and I fermented black-strap molasses (as a part of a general homebrewing project.)

We uncorked it at a party. People mostly looked at it and wrinkled their noses, "No, thanks."

Until one sip drove me to my knees with its extraordinary grossness. *THEN* everyone was excited about it.

They do it for the same reason that people treat a "Wet Paint" sign as an instruction to touch the wall to see. "Well, but is it still wet?"

"De Gustibus" means one person's nasty taste is another person's pleasant experience. Loved limburger, didn't care for Durian much the one time I tried it. Years ago I had a co-worker who brought some kind of native fish sauce to work. It literally evacuated our shared cafeteria when he microwaved it, but I thought it tasted kinda neat. (PS Just added you to my friend list, like the way you think. Saw you comment in [livejournal.com profile] hawkegirl's journal. Read your pages, could become a fan.)

*waves* Hi! Welcome to the insaity. ;)

(also, I don't tend to check on wet paint, either, unless I _know_ the sign has been there a while)
