yeah, having a physical map helps. You can walk EVERYWHERE if you want to. random fights are frequent though. there are patches you can get though so that animals in the wild only attack if you attack or if they are diseased. cuts down on the hack/slash/heal part of the game and then you can focus more on adventuring.
You can also get rides/magical transportation from place to place. doesn't cost much and makes the game go more quickly. But sometimes you have to go WAY off the beaten path and can only get there by wandering.
That's the trouble with a non-linear game...distractions:) really easy to get sidetracked on mini-quests.
