It's amazing how much poorly designed stuff there is out there, where a moderate investment of design would save so much time and pain for so many.

You might know all this already, but it's funny . . .

While trying to get it to work with Unidesk, I learned that technology at registers is often described as "point of sale". So, a receipt printer would be a "point of sale printer" in industry jargon.

People who have to work with these things refer to them as "POS printers" (or whatever device it is you are annoyed at).

I thought that poor usability was by design for retail workers. :(

If by "by design" you mean a lack of design involvement, I bet you are correct, yes.
