I didn't have anything I cared for myself, not even plants, until the end of college (and then, just plants). The next door neighbors had a dog and a cat, and my friends had other dogs I'd help walk and stuff, and hamsters and gerbils.

And one had a bunch of snakes, some of whom he sometimes brought to school for show and tell. (This is the one whose snake was so dumb he encircled the couch and bit down on his own tail; they had to lift the couch and run him under cold water until he was insensate enough that they could pry open its jaws...)

Another friend's sister had fish, and then got piranhas, and then had fewer fish.

So I was around pets; but they weren't mine.

A dorm-mate had a rat, which she liked putting on people's shoulder unsuspectingly. She was...not polite. The rat was, though.

One of my exes had two hermit crabs, but then one clipped the claw off the other and then got neglected by her sister, so that didn't end well.

As an adult, I've lived with cats and a rabbit named Easter Dinner, and lots of plants, and your fish and snails.
