Apr. 2nd, 2004 11:17 pmHoly _shit_, that was crowded! But I had more normal amounts of energy (for me), for at least the first few hours. Finally, however, the lack of sunlight for many days (stupid clouds and rain) and only just having gotten over irritating exhaustion sickness got to me, and I started fading _fast_. So, escape was required. (Run away!)
I'm just hoping that the next one I go to is not that crowded. (watch the next Psinging be almost empty, since it's one I'm not attending)
I seem to be starting to get tired of songs about toys and teddy bears. Must remember to escape for a bit during those, because being annoyed by songs just isn't good.
I have developed great fondness for Pippin's "Corner of the Sky" and "No Time At All".
Also, Dar Williams' "You're Aging Well" almost made me cry in the car driving down for pre-Psinging dinner. That was unexpected...
Sleep needed badly. Family visiting tomorrow.

Date: 2004-04-02 08:58 pm (UTC)I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one.
I feel guilty about it though, since I assume my musical tastes are just weird, and I know that people are using Psinging for different things. I'd like to strike a better balance in my life between trying to accept everything without acknowledging when I just don't like it, and my instinctive attitude of "the only real music is either orchestral, atonal, or has a clear stanzaic form, more than three variations, and no known author."
Do you know what ever happened to the kids' Psinging that people once were organizing?
Psinging issues
Date: 2004-04-02 09:44 pm (UTC)Re "toy" and "teddy bear" songs: Me, I'm not specifically sick of the "kid" songs. But I am a little tired of almost *any* of the songs that I'm lukewarm about myself but that seem to be chosen nearly *every* Psinging. ("Rambling Rover", e.g., is an OK song, but it's not exactly on par with "Mary Ellen Carter" or "Day Is Done" as a song I want to play and sing *every* fortnight.) I wouldn't mind so much if those "regular" songs just happen to be really popular with the group (other than me) and it's someone new choosing the song each week, but I have the sneaking suspicion that's not the case. Me, even when it's not so crowded at Psinging, I only ask for an average of one song (often none at all). Tonight, I requested two songs, but we only got to "Space Oddity".
Maybe the best strategy is, if more than one of us wants a particular "weird" song, we can form a united front to push it. :-) Months ago I was pondering pushing a different song-- mostly Moxy Früvous tunes-- every session or two, and putting the mp3 up online for the unfamiliar to have a chance to learn it. But I never followed through on that plan. I don't know for sure if there are any other Früvous fans in the current group other than
Re Pkids: There is a mailing list, which I'm on. (I went to only one gathering, mostly for the practice experience of playing accompaniment for little kids.) There hasn't been an actual get-together in months, though a recent message went out pondering holding another.

Date: 2004-04-03 07:25 am (UTC)There are probably other songs that are requested too often, but it's the toy/teddy bear ones that I'm starting to _notice_. I'm sure that, as time passes, I'll start to notice more.
I don't know Moxy Fruvous (how did you make that crazy special character?) very well, but as I recall, I've liked what I've heard.
Me, I've been getting _Eddie From Ohio_, _Dar Williams_, and _The Nields_ in my head lately. Should probably learn some of those and bring them in!

Date: 2004-04-03 07:21 am (UTC)I should really stop being lazy/distractable and bring more songs in, myself.
Also, I'm very amused by your definition of 'real music'. :) How _do_ you tolerate Psinging with _that_ definition?

Date: 2004-04-04 03:22 pm (UTC)The only total failures tend to be things that are both out of my range and so complicated I can't find a lower, more comfortable octave (Indigo Girls, for instance). If I can't even imagine myself singing it, it's very hard for me to get a feel for.

Date: 2004-04-03 10:03 am (UTC)And Pippin has a few good songs (in addition to some horrendous numbers). I like the two you mentioned, but also "Simple Joys," "Magic to Do," and "On the Right Track." Check 'em out.
