I want...

A beach, the salt tang air, the sight and sound of waves, birds. Tidal pools, critters to watch. Rocks to climb on.

Somewhere new, that I've never been.

Trees and forests, footsteps muffled by pine needles. Trees reminding me to stop doing and remember to just be. Slow down.

Trees to climb, using muscles that don't get enough use, climbing up and just settling on a branch for a while. Watching the birds and squirrels and bugs as they do their own things.

Novelty.

The quiet that you don't get in a city. The quiet that isn't truly quiet, and instead has birds and bugs and wind and water. No cars. No sounds of electronics in the background. No time, if only for a moment.

Critters that don't immediately run. That watch me just as much as I am watching them, after having frozen in place because I heard movement.

If there are people, I want no words. Quiet companionship and exploration.

A tree house like childhood friends of mine had, in the forest behind their house. Somewhere to sit and be present without being invasive.

---

Of course, I have never actually found a beach with tidal pools, nor are most trees equipped with branches low and strong enough that I can climb them. I don't know if I can still stay still long enough, or move slowly enough, to not immediately frighten nearby animals into flight.

I did not explore as much as I might otherwise have when I went to camp for a weekend at the Quabbin, due in part to ticks and mosquitoes. And, GPS helps, but I am always terrified that I'll get thoroughly lost if I go somewhere remote on my own. Even in places with paths. So I never explore very far.

But Friday there will be goats. And chickens. And cats. And a horse. And a second thanksgiving, but that's not as important. ;)

This post brought to you by one of the other presenters this morning asking us to imagine where we would like to be if it were not in class right them (but to stay PG). (their topic was mental imagery)

My first thought was a beach, with the wind and the motion of the waves and the smell and the sound and birds and tiny fishes and sometimes small crabs and shells and... And then tidal pools, because I've always wanted to find tidal pools. And rocks, because climbing on rocks by the water just... I dunno. Because yes.

And then there were Google maps satellite explorations. And music containing much yearning in the car on the way home.

Have you ever been to Acadia?

It has sandy beaches, pebble beaches, boulder beaches, tidal pools, and a thunder hole you can get sucked into and drown (please don't do that), and forests with red squirrels, a (small) mountain to climb, places to camp, rivers, and other fun stuff.

Maybe we should plan another trip there; the drive's not too ridiculous.

... thunder hole. That sounds rather like a euphemism!

And yes, we should!
