I was not... the most aware of popular music at the time, I don't remember precisely what year I first went (but probably had my first year been when the RAs were screwing with the music at dances, given all but my last summer were in Lancaster and my last summer was in '92 - possibly in Baltimore? Something closer to NH, at any rate, than Lancaster was, and that had just opened that year), and my youngest sister also went, so last time I tried to do this (before there were compilations of CTY canon on youtube) I enlisted her help which meant that her canon and my canon got mixed up in my head.

That sentence is a bit of a mouthful. Ah, well.

And, of course, it wasn't _called_ canon then, either!

In the definite category are
American Pie (because duh),
Forever Young,
Bizarre Love Triangle (which makes me wonder if I missed entirely obvious poly subtext in my intense obliviousness which was compounded by not learning to have/read body language until my senior year in high school - you know, _after_ my last CTY),
Rock Lobster,
Personal Jesus,
Oh L'amour,
Time Warp (and I think I never _did_ make it to a Rocky Horror showing, since they are always late at night! And while I watched it on my own not long after my first CTY, it makes a lot less sense alone. :),
Stairway,
and I'm pretty sure both Istanbul and Birdhouse.

In the much less certain category are End of the World As We Know It, Nightswimming [edited to add: Nope! This was one that came from my sister, I think], and given what was said on the canon page, perhaps No One is To Blame [edited to add: No, this doesn't feel right].

Hmm. This may also have been where I first heard Love Shack...

One of these years I will figure out what periodically causes me to hunt down CTY stuff. It is _absurdly_ much easier to find stuff online now than last time I tried!

Now I want to try to figure out when I first went. It's possible, but not definite, that my parents would know. I _am_ a middle child of 6, and all.

[ETA] I used to have a tape that someone made for me, possibly my first time there. That's what turned into canon in my brain, since it was easily available at the time. But that tape is _long_ gone, unless it's somewhere in the frightening place that is the storage in the barn...

I always forget that you went to CTY too!

I always forget who went, myself. :)

None of the people I knew then are still people I have contact with, which also doesn't help!

Let me see if I can remember my canon.

American Pie
Forever Young
Bizarre Love Triangle
Istanbul
Oh L'Amour
Brown-Eyed Girl
Rock Lobster
Time Warp

I think. I'm not sure if "It's the end of the world as we know it" got to canon status for my site/time but it was regularly played.

Also "In Your Eyes" got to being played regularly before Forever Young but I'm not sure that anyone thought that meant it was Required.

LAN, 90-94.

Ah, so some overlap!

With further reflection, my idea of 'canon' is probably more accurately 'the tape that someone made me of songs that they associated with CTY'. :)

Odd to contemplate overlap, really.

I at least got a couple of the canonical instructors: my first course included Haz for Astronomy, and I got Pomm and Timmer first session my last year, which was the only year I did two sessions.

In retrospect, I kind of wonder why I kept doing humanities courses, because goddamn did humanities courses study halls suck.

Overlap oddity: I kmow, isn't it?

... There were canonical instructors?

Of course there were canonical instructors. Why am I even surprised? :)

I don't really remember much clearly about classes themselves, other than that math was stupid easy, although not as easy as for others in the classes with me, that creative writing made my head hurt (not helped by not having learned yet that I write a _lot_ more easily on a computer than by hand), and Latin made my head hurt in a different way.

Also, I'm terrible at improv. :) And most of the dancing I actually did involved a heck of a lot of spinning in circles while holding other people's hands.

Mmm. First year was pre-algebra into pre-calc, and I'm pretty sure it was two sessions. Second year was Latin I, twice, because my brain did _not_ want to let it stick the first time. The last year I went, I know I did some sort of creative writing thing. I may have only gone for the one session that last year, actually.

I definitely didn't stay in touch with people across years, although some of the people I met my last year I managed to stay in touch with for a little while. I'm terrible at writing letters!

So maybe I only did go during high school? 90, 91, 92. Could have sworn it was before high school, but my age in high school makes that really hard to tell. Wonder if I have any labelled photos lying around in boxes somewhere?

I now own a copy of Pomm and Timmer's number theory textbook!

My sequence was Astronomy, Etymology, Paleobiology, Greek, Number Theory and Latin the last year. And I did THEO because I needed another maths class to graduate high school and my actual high school had already run out of maths to teach me....

I am in touch, yet, with my boyfriend from number theory. ;) We exchange emails at least once a year. (Our birthdays are four days apart.)

I have no idea what THEO is. :)

It's a bit disturbing to need another math class when there are no more left to take! Bad high school....

Very cool, re still in touch with boyfriend from number theory!

Now I'm wondering if my age also had something to do with my trouble keeping in touch with people (my last year, I was 14).

And I remembered recently that I did actually keep in touch with one of the early friends I made; she'd come visit us when we were on vacation in the Pocono Mountains. I suspect it was less that _I_ kept in touch, and more that my parents helped out with that.

THEO = Number theory.

Maryland state graduation requirements require three maths credits. The "standard" gifted progression was geometry, alg ii/trig, pre-calc, calculus for grades 9-12, and my school, being Not The Maths And Sciences Magnet, had resources for that. (Blair could do advanced calc.)

I took BC level AP Calculus as a sophomore....

My full story about Math In School is kind of ranty and I will spare you unless you ask. ;)

According to the RealCTY wiki (http://www.realcty.org/mw/index.php?title=Canon#History_of_the_Canon), the canon was apparently fully canonized by us, as in Digiclan, in 1995. (Being part of other people's lore is weird as hell.)

The full track list for the CD mentioned in that part of the entry is as follows, in order:
Istanbul (Not Constantinople)
Blister in the Sun
James Brown is Dead
In Your Eyes
Rock Lobster
Birdhouse in Your Soul
Nightswimming
Bizarre Love Triangle
Stairway to Heaven
It's the End of the World as We Know It
Time Warp
Forever Young
American Pie
