Sometimes, the words that people say to me that matter the most are said to me by books, sometimes by people.

I'm feeling a desire to share some of those words, right now.

John D. Macdonald, _Pale Gray For Guilt_, "In all emotional conflicts, [...] the thing you find the hardest to do is the thing you should do."

A friend of mine, a few years ago. I don't remember the exact wording... "If something that happens, or that was said, still bothers you a few hours later, you should probably speak up about it. If it bothers you a day or more later, you should definitely speak up."

This last one has helped quite a lot in getting me to speak up about really stupid little things, thereby preventing them from turning into big things. And, to speak up about big things where the possible reaction was (usually irrationally) scaring me.

I had a few more in my head in the car, but they have since flown away...

So true. The corrallary to this is: "If something you yourself said or did is bothering you a few hours later, you might want to think about why you did it. If it's bothering you a few days later, you might want to think if it's the first time you've done something like that."

Patterns, it's so much about patterns, making them, seeing them, breaking them, making new ones.

Yes. Indeed. But it's often seeing the patterns from within one's own life that is the most difficult.
