More from today
Aug. 8th, 2010 07:26 pmT-shirt to help protect my back from sun helps more if you realize that it's an option before you burn. It does, however, help to prevent additional burning.
It's difficult to remember to apply sunscreen often enough, especially when you're in the middle of instruction and have _NO_ idea how much time is passing.
In short, very nearly the entirety of my backside is burned from the various surface-level stuff I did today. However, tomorrow shall be _under_ the water a bit more as I will be practicing scuba instead of snorkel/surface/skin diving. And so between the t-shirt and sunscreen on my face, I should be ok tomorrow. My face is not particularly burned, although a tiny bit, but it's been getting some sun throughout, as have my lower arms which are also basically fine. Yay for base tan in the places I got one! (I considered trying to take a picture of my back, but couldn't figure out how to do so and it be safe for work)
I have very little trouble with skin diving, except for the part where you need to be able to clear your mask of water without surfacing, by breathing out through your nose. It's not that I can't do that part, it's that I have never needed to be able to _not_ breathe through my nose while breathing through my mouth and with water directly in front of my nose. I spent a fair bit of time this afternoon in the water with fins, a snorkel, and no mask, practicing breathing through my mouth without trying to use my nose. This is surprisingly difficult! I also alternated with breathing out through my nose after breathing in through my mouth, since I will need to be able to do that to clear out a mask. It did get easier, but it also definitely still requires _CONCENTRATION_ and I do still periodically flinch as I instinctively try to breathe through my nose. At least at this point, I no longer get large amounts of water in my sinuses, only a tiny bit in the entrance to my nose. My sinuses are now very clear, BTW.
Tomorrow, some introduction to gear, classroom time, and time actually using the scuba gear. My battery is running out, as I have managed to misplace my plug that converts three to two prong in the 5 minutes I had it out, because I got a splinter and wanted it out. So no power where I am right now, and the room I can power in is locked. This does mean I won't get on again until I have power. :)
