So I was in Moab last I updated!
Jul. 12th, 2010 03:44 pmI spent a full day at Arches, which is both very neat and has lots of fun hikes. That was fun, if tiring due to hot & sweaty. I actually turned on my AC when it was mid-90s! Photo set here.
On the way back from the landscape arch, there were a few kids who'd found what I believe to be a whiptail lizard (here and here, and was standing its ground. When one was about to touch the poor thing, I tried to tell her not to, but they did not actually speak English. Thankfully, the dad-type person told her not to, and also later told an older boy to not poke it with a stick, either. I mean, I understand the desire to capture lizards! But not in a National Park.
Later, the same girl saw - and thankfully did not try to touch - a baby bird which was periodically being fed by its mother. video here, some pictures after it.
Very nifty park, even if warm. Did not make it to Canyonlands, unfortunately! Headed toward Chama, as I wished to try to get some pottery I saw at the beginning of my trip in Taos Pueblo. On the way, I stopped at Hole N' the Rock in Utah, to do a tour and to feed the animals. Cannot take pictures inside the house, unfortunately, as it's a really nifty place. 5000 sq feet, blasted out of the rock and then touched up by the couple who lived there. Some pictures of the outside and of the zoo!
Then, I continued on my way to Chama. Pictures, into Colorado, then to New Mexico.
Many mosquitoes, used my anti-bug stuff, and they left me alone. This is good, since I was camping!
Next morning, found the business card of the woman whose store had the pottery, and called her. Good thing, too, as she was busy both Sunday and Monday, the days I could have been there. She'll be emailing me photos of the pottery she has, though, and we can figure something out.
This, though, meant a change of plans! It no longer made any sense to go to Taos at this point, so I sent mail to
heinleinfan to make sure it was ok to come a day early (it was, but they were both busy until 9:30p), and to
metahacker to update him on my plans. Then, I went to checkout and take pictures of hummindbirds before heading out.
Was idly considering trying to stop at a wildlife place I passed on the way down, but ended up going nowhere near it. Did, however, go to Great Sand Dunes National Park, and take lots of pictures. I was most amused by how tiny people were when I could see them at all, on the dunes.
There had been a storm pending for most of the time I was there, but it never actually broke over the dunes, although I suspect it did over the Sangre De Cristo mountains nearby. It's really neat, however, to be able to see storms from upwards of 20 miles away.
Had dinner at a rather odd place whose name I cannot recall in Pueblo, CO, so as to arrive in Colorado Springs a bit closer to the time they would be available. It was alright food, I suppose, and cost about as much as staying in Taos would have, so no net loss. :)
This morning, I got a box which would fit the tent and sleeping bag, and have done much packing. Tonight, we ought to be able to get out the stuff I had stored here for the Florida and Honduras part of my trip, as well as get out the huge box for the cooler. Tomorrow, I plan to make sure that I can sanely fit what I need into the luggage which is not the big red bag (because I want to ship it now!), and then it's off to the post office with lots of stuff. I'll likely empty and clean the cooler after this point, since I expect to want an entire trip to the post office for it, anyway, and I have the time! I'm entirely unsure how I'm shipping my walking sticks. I may go back to the camping store and see what they have for boxes again, as I forgot to ask this morning.
Lots of postcards to fill out and send (but nothing like the insane number of the last batch), will probably also do that tomorrow.
Leaving for Orlando on Thursday afternoon, to start the Florida part of the trip!
