Was briefly in the Navajo Nation, and will return there again soon. Currently just outside of it, in the Four Corners jumping off point of Farmington.
Having much trouble finding local produce, and suspect that this is simply a factor of being too early in their season.
Have funny tan lines, which you may notice are darker on my left side due to the window, and which are largely due to t-shirt-wearing. (with non-tshirts, I have only my hands showing, and my left hand is quite a bit darker than the rest of me)
Went to the Navajo Code Talkers' Museum (warning: makes noise) in Gallup's visitor's center. Then, visited Richardson's Trading Post and bought nothing, although there was a lovely necklace that I could not justify $350 for (also, it was a dead pawn, which is sad). Most of what was there was too... big, busy, something for me. Very few things interested me in the first place, which is probably good, since everything in there is expensive!
Then, off to Window Rock. Didn't actually manage to find the actual rock, but went into their visitor's center/museum, and then to their zoo/botanical park of local animals and plants. Then, since there was only a single hotel that I knew of in Window Rock, and I wanted to go to Farmington anyway, it was off to Farmington. This means that I can delay the 3% tax on everything (5? or 8? on lodging) in Navajo Nation a little longer.
I think I may have more time between now and needing to be in Las Vegas than I need, so I'm trying to decide if I want to try to go see some Saguaro Cactus or not. I'm not really very clear on how far south of Flagstaff I would need to go. The other option is to go a bit north from here, and do the stuff around Durango, CO a little early (this would include Mesa Verde and Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad). Of course, I suspect that I could do both, as well as the stuff in Navajo Nation, Hopi reservation, Flagstaff, and Sedona, before the end of the month. It _is_ only the 7th!
So maybe I'll do that. Yay, flexible schedule! Should figure out approximate arrival time in Durango, and see if the CouchSurfer I pinged earlier can host me this much sooner.
Pictures of Code talkers, near and at the visitor's center, zoo and botanical park, and on way to Shiprock.
