Feb. 25th, 2004 07:20 pmI just remembered what my cat did last night, so I share. And then, I try to rest and convince this cold to leave me alone (I always forget how many colds I get in the wintertime. Stupid colds!).
So, my roommate bought a chicken salad from Friendly's - across the street from me - for dinner. He opened it up, and put it onto the counter, but then decided he needed a shower.
Leaving the chicken pieces laying on their lovely bed of greens, with no one nearby, and nothing covering them.
Ash, my cat, has a thing for chicken. Pretty much any food he thinks he might want, he'll beg for. He's shameless, really (and has been known to quite happily eat lemon poppy seed muffins).
But chicken? Chicken, he'll beg for, will attempt to steal off your plate while you are eating it if you're not paying attention, and will almost certainly take from anywhere he can find it if it's not being watched.
This means that, while I was in the living room, and my roommate was in the showed, Ash hopped up onto the stove, and grabbed a piece of chicken. It was when he jumped back to the floor to eat it that I heard him land. And suddenly knew what he was doing.
I went in there, and sure enough, he had a hunk of chicken in his mouth, and was doing his best to eat it as fast as he possibly could. I took it from him, not wanting to encourage the behavior of stealing food.
I initially was going to throw it away, but decided that was a stupid waste, and rinsed it off and put it in the fridge to give to him as a treat, much later.
I yelled at him for it, but he spent the entire time whining at me and complaining about me having taken his food away from him, when he had stolen it fair and square. For the next 5-10 minutes. He can be _very_ whiny.
Then, my roommate proceeded to move the salad to his room. And put it down. And leave the room.
I asked if he really wanted to be doing that, but he expressed disbelief that Ash would repeat the behavior in his room. He went in to check, and nothing had happened yet.
I don't know what he went off to do next, but the next thing I knew, Ash was running out of my roommate's room with a hunk of chicken in his mouth, and about to set it down to eat it.
In between massive amounts of giggles at Ash's sheer bravado, I watched my roommate take the _second_ piece of chicken from him, and put it with the first.
I continued having giggle fits about it for a while. Meanwhile, Ash was spending the time while the salad was consumed between glaring at me for stealing his food, attempting to steal my roommate's food repeatedly, and sulking by the front door.
Yes. My cat loves chicken. And is _not_ shy about obtaining it. I just was not quite aware of precisely _how_ not shy until last night, because I don't leave my food sitting all on its own. Even when it doesn't have chicken in it.
