I do believe that Melbourne has better claim than New England does to the New England saying about "If you don't like the weather, wait a minute". It's... odd to be too warm for jeans one day, and cold enough to want a jumper sweater the next. It's not even predictable in how rapid the temperature changes might be. I was amused to overhear someone this morning commenting on how four seasons in one day is typical Melbourne weather.

But! I have not had to deal with humidity on top of the warm. I have, however, been more covered up than I would have been in similar warm weather in the US, just because I would prefer to avoid burning, and putting sunscreen on is annoying - so I try to reduce how much skin I have to put it on.

Tap water that doesn't need filtering makes me happy. So does reasonable public transportation. And lots of space, even in the middle of the city. And lots of restaurants with free range eggs (among other things which I expect to see in health food stores, but nowhere else).

Going to go feed parrots today, with the driving (and location suggestion) aid of curlygrrl. Distinctly odd seeing birds flying around which I only see in pet stores in the US.

Yummy dinner last night, with many nifty people, some of whom I'd not met before. Was periodically very, very surreal (usually because of people quoting things I was either completely unfamiliar with, or just didn't recognize the quote. Yes, the fact that I don't watch TV does appear in strange situations. Also? "Bad [person], no biscuit" is odd coming from people who didn't see the original commercial. I think it was a commercial, at least. But then, at least no one was attempting to quote things from the US in an appropriate accent. _That_ hurts my head!)

It's funny how many random things I've thought I should comment on, and just never get around to it, or I don't keep it in my head long enough.

(incidentally, jet lag and time I tend to take to adjust to sleeping in a new place took about the same amount of time (the first weekend), which was kinda strange.)

It's strange receiving mail in the middle of the day which I _know_ is sent out at midnight. Similarly strange to be reading comics and have it keep being yesterday's comics. :)

I'm glad you're having a fabulous time! I'm sorry I probably won't be able to make it down to Melbourne, too many things coming up at the same time and all leave being mostly cancelled have pretty much stranded me in Canberra. I hope you have a great time and go to the Aquarium if you haven't already. It's FANTASTIC!

The other common saying about Melbourne weather is that if you don't like it, wait five minutes (because it will change).

And all those pop culture references flying thick and fast must have been a bit to handle—I think you coped very well. Although since most of us spend a bit too much time on ye old Intarweb, it's sometimes difficult to work out where things originate—the biscuit thing as a perfect example. I've caught myself using expressions just because I've seen them so much on LJ, for example, and don't really know the source but have worked out the intent from context.

I certainly am also guilty of using references from things where I did not actually encounter the original, although some of the time I at least know where it came from. So I certainly get that! Mostly, I tend to find myself starting to use words and phrases which are frequently used around me, probably very much related to the same thing in my brain which causes me to start unconsciously mimicking accents (which I've not yet done much of, here).
