Astronomy Picture of the Day.

_Solaris_ is an amazingly slow movie. I do believe I talked to the movie even more than I normally do!

It is good that I have accepted the existance of, and therefore had time to relax into, a partner-level relationship w/[livejournal.com profile] australian_joe _before_ he goes back to Australia. I make no claims for the distance to be an easy thing, however. Someone remind me, the next time I decide there are things I should not do for difficulty reasons (rather than for healthy for myself reasons), that life _really_ likes teaching me that difficult is not sufficient reason to avoid things that are of sufficient impact to cause me to protest too much (but it _is_ still a good reason to be cautious!). *amused with self*

Diesel tonight, although I have no idea how long I shall stay. Probably not long, since it seems that this is the time of year for excessive crowdedness at the Diesel poly boston socials. But I will be there! And so will [livejournal.com profile] aelisdeliria! And [livejournal.com profile] australian_joe will have been there long before I get there!

Also! It is amazingly funny/cute/sweet to, when one is on a phone being handed between people, hear 'Sweetie, it's your sweetie!'

Ok. I go now.

English has insufficient words. Even considering how many words there are (mostly synonyms), there are not enough.

For those who know Spanish:

Why are 'conocer' and 'saber' both 'to know' in English? Hello, _really_ different meanings! ('To be aquainted with someone' and 'to have knowledge about something/one')

Or... 'ser' and 'estar', being 'to be'? ('to be, on a permanent basis' - like, for example, 'I am myself', or 'to be, on a temporary basis' - like, 'I am well')

Or... 'picante' and 'caliente', as 'hot'? (spicy hot vs temperature hot - seriously, I tend to try to use 'picante' _all the time_. But not everyone knows Spanish)

Why do we say that we _are_ hungry, rather than (as in Spanish) we have hunger? (or cold, or hot, or sleepy, or thirsty, or...)

I _do_ use 'have' that way often enough, because that makes more sense in my head. If y'all ever wondered why my grammar is so strange, combine not thinking in words, and knowing two different languages, where my brain often tries to pick the grammar that is closest to how I think or the ideas came out of my head. :)

Language of Flowers, linked from [livejournal.com profile] ladytabitha, and all I can say is that getting 999 of _anything_ is a frightening thought, completely aside from any hidden meanings. But, neat!

Also, [livejournal.com profile] ladytabitha not only is amazingly schmoopy in her posts, but she also links to powerful schmoop! (I really like that word, can anyone tell? SCHMOOOOOP!)

Finally, people give me excellent links of shiny! Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] bridgetester whose brain I _also_ seem to be sharing. Where's the count at now?
