Just a bit of a grump, then back to regularly scheduled programming.

This coming weekend (Sat-Tues) is taken up by a global company meeting. This means:

a) I will be sick during it, almost certainly, making it even _more_ annoying.
b) I will therefore be flying with a cold
c) I'm missing alt.polycon 11
d) I'm missing work group
e) they are making the days _stupidly_ long, meaning I will not get to catch up on sleep or have enough alone time (something like the busses leaving the hotel at 8am, and returning around 10pm)
f) I'm not at home, so I will sleep poorly
g) we have hotel room mates, and I have no idea who I will be sharing a room with
h) we can't have opposite sex roommates unless we are married to them - this means that none of the people I would have chosen were options.

*grump* Ah, well. Hopefully I will manage to enjoy myself anyway.

Re g) and h): One of the very few advantages of being a smoker is that (a) I insist on having a smoking room during a conference and (b) nobody wants to room with me.

Although all of the closet smokers usually wind up joining me in my room for smoke breaks ...

Okay, that's just ridiculous.
After all, it's not like you're all adults who are able to engage in consensual relationships or anything....

Hmm. I suspect there are smokers in this company, possibly even female ones, so even if I _did_ smoke, I doubt it'd help.

Office Romance

I would guess that they don't want to encourage you to have romances with your office-mates. If/when you break up, then it can be difficult to get work done with the other person / people. Some companies are even reluctant to hire married people. (and I bet that they don't want to deal with people asking their co-workers to room with them, that could lead to some ugly situations if the answer is no)

One the flip side, if you work all the time, how are you supposed to meet anyone to have an affair with besides your co-workers.

All of this ignores the possibility of having an consensual relationship with your same sex hotel-mates, but let's not point out that particular wrinkle to them.

OK, but...

Rooming with someone for a weekend at a company meeting implies that you get along with them; not necessarily that you're planning on using the space to screw around! Besides - it's not like it's difficult to find opportunities for such, were that the intent.

Silly rules.

I _just_ wanted to room with people I _knew_! That said, my roommate for the weekend was a good one.

Not being allowed to room with people of the opposite gender is ridiculous and treating you like children.
