How does one draw, paint, some other form of non-photographic visual representation, light?

I was trying to figure this out last night, because I was playing around with trying to draw a sunset (or perhaps rise) with colored pencils and crayons. And then, I wanted to draw the sky more... with stars. And had _no_ idea how.

My brain's been working on that ever since.

you start with a dark base coat then phase it into the light range .

So, you've got this object which has a spot of light on it. The spot of light is the same color as the rest of the object, but with more white mixed into it.

You leave holes in the darkness to put the light in, and then you fill them up.

There are different tricks that the impressionists had, but the canonical way to represent dawn or dusk is to begin by applying a layer of white undercolor at the horizon. Put blue over this to make the color of the sky, with some streaks of red to represent the sunlight. Further out, go to darker shades of purple which eventually fade into the indigo of the night sky.

A good thing to remember when representing the sky is that the daytime sky is white tinted with blue. The intensity of the blue varies with location, but the white is always there.
