Jessie still needs help

My childhood friend is still struggling with the effects of a burst brain embolism two years ago.

It's worsened by not being able to afford a proper helper (her mother is her helper, but is losing her ability to function) and therefore needing to do far more than her brain allows, not having managed to get on disability (and apparently if you've been unemployed for two years you can no longer get on disability?), and repeatedly losing important medical professional due to them changing which insurance they take and her insurance changing under her (at different times).

She also is unable to get and keep a good case manager as the good ones are too busy to take her case and the others can't handle her case and give up.

She needs a lawyer because she doesn't have enough brain to do her taxes so she's getting hounded and fined by the IRS, one of her housemates is abusive and getting worse (actively trying to trigger Jessie's post-embolism seizures, for example), and she needs help getting a case manager and dealing with trying to get on disability.

The worst part is that she's forced to do a lot of the tasks that a helper or case manager would do for her, making her previous recovery go backwards as it's taking energy that she should be using to recover and heal.

Any help would be appreciated, as she's terrified she's going to end up on the streets with a barely functional brain.

Apparently groundhogs do not care

I was sitting by the side of my small backyard pond removing debris (and encouraging attached critters to go back in the water) when I noticed the plants behind me pushing on me. I was like maybe it's the wind? Waited a bit longer after freezing just in case, and who came out to nom on the plants by the pond?

This critter!

Another request for my measuring UX class!

Hi lovely people! My team has our tree tests for the measuring UX class, and as before please do not take it on mobile (not sure if it matters, but since it did on card sorting it might here). Please only take one of the two links! This should be a lot less work than the previous one, also.

Wanna help me with a class?

I need people to do a plant-related card sort for me and my group for the Measuring UX class at Bentley. For those who are not clear, a card sort is a task where you take a bunch of items and sort them however you think makes sense. There is no screener, since we largely want the data so we can do stats on the results, so feel free to pass it along to anyone else you think might be willing to help!

Updated to add:  Please do not do it on the phone - use a computer. Evidently it's not great on a phone.

Thanks!

Leadership and management class

One of the classes I'm taking is for leadership and management. It's funny because I do not want to manage anyone. Mentoring, sure, but not managing.

a) I'm great at working with people to help them with things and understanding where they are coming from, but it drains me severely. So I can do it on a mentoring basis, but not more than that comfortably.
b) I'm not good at my _own_ schedule, let alone representing and helping others with their schedules.
c) I would really not do well with constant meetings, especially given my trouble with auditory input.

If I were offered the option to be a manager but with an out, I might try, Because I might be wrong, but I do not think so. And I feel like having that option is rare, that of trying to be a manager but being able to stop after a trial period.

how do habits work for you all?

One of the books I read for one of my class talked about habits as if people do them without thinking about it. I don't think I do that - even brushing my teeth and flossing are things I have to use mental energy to start. And if I want to do them well, bring mindful about it is necessary.

I think the closest I get is getting dressed in the morning - but that's largely because I have clothing set up to be without many decisions required. So I grab the clothing and put them on, but even then I still have to think about it to not have them inside out and buttoned up right if they have multiple buttons.

Do your habits require any energy to initiate? Do you do them well or right even without paying attention? I'm trying to understand why the book would talk about adding additional habits to existing ones to make them habits as well.

I do wonder if this relates to my difficulty doing anything (except class or work, which require that) more regularly than every two weeks, or exercise that isn't because I have another reason besides exercise to do them.

And doing things that require scheduling even as often as every two weeks. Of course, I know scheduling and estimating time is really hard for me, so that last bit may be that.

The thing about history is that it's rarely taught in a way I can grasp and retain.

I kind of want a globe that is a physical object but also digital - let me tell it a time period (year, decade, century, whatever) and have it show me the world at that time.

Maybe pop up the biggest events in a particular area for that time period, with the ability to adjust what you're interested in. Boundary markings to the best of our knowledge at the time, indications of what changed where, when, and why for boundaries. Inventions, preferably including not just the people famous for them, the option to see our best understanding of a day/week/time period in the life of someone from a place and time.

Just. Let me explore. Help me be able to see what was going on in the world at the same time, how it was then in various parts of the world. I always love finding out what was happening at the same time, but it's rarely taught that way. It's usually names and dates and I'm bad with those in my own life, let alone as dry, isolated information I'm supposed to remember.

Question related to my class project

When you think of places you can go hang out, what kinds of things come to mind?

Childhood friend had a burst brain aneurysm.

Hi folks.

I think some of you might know my childhood friend Jessie. She had a brain aneurysm burst on Christmas and needs help with bills and things while she recovers. As you might know, it's really hard to recover from such things, so no one yet knows what things will look like for her.

break timers

Hi everyone! I know I've been crazy quiet. I'm taking a class and also will be doing a 6 month contract at Indeed starting next week, a week after my last Indeed contract ended.

But I'm curious about something! I use break timers, but I want them to leave me alone if I am in a video call or gaming. Anyone know of anything (for windows, although Mac would also benefit from pausing during video chat) that does that?

Inevitable betrayal trope?

Far far too many forms of media lately are all about the betrayal that the audience knows early on, but the protagonists do not.

I _hate_ this, for a few reasons:

1) there's enough horrible things happening thank you
2) much like horror movies, I am on edge the entire movie after the betrayal has been made clear that it will happen. (Horror movies are hard for me due mostly to jump scares, which are very much drawn out via music and sound)
3) I don't understand the appeal, at all.

Betrayal, fine. Knowing about it for most of the show, no.

I mean, I'm not a fan of suspecting that horrible things of any sort will happen. There are certainly instances where I want spoilers, and usually it's so that I a) know it'll turn out ok, or b) that it won't and I can stop watching. Sometimes even knowing doesn't help enough, but it can help me push through hard stuff.

But... It's really hard to avoid nowadays. I don't get it. Even watching kids' shows isn't enough.
