harp!

Last night, I learned that I can replace a harp string. I found this highly amusing, since it wasn't my harp, and I'd never tried before. Apparently fishing-wire-like stuff is unable to withstand my desire to tie knots in it. Knots! (I should learn to tie a wide variety of knots. It just sounds like a useful skill to have!)

I also made plans to buy [livejournal.com profile] aelisdeliria's harp from her. Lap harp! Even if I never really learn to play it, I _love_ lap harps. My gods, I love them. Have wanted a harp for years and years and years. Is, in fact, the only musical instrument, other than my voice, I've ever felt particularly drawn to _using_. (listening to is an entirely different story)

This does mean my nails are shorter. Not so short as to not be able to scratch, but not long enough to go out beyond the tips of my fingers. Apparently the harp won over my desire to have long-ish nails. ;)

Harp. Yes. *nods firmly*

[livejournal.com profile] sunspiral sent me the best present ever - a deck of Knot Playing Cards. On the face of each is instructions on how to tie a different knot.

Just sharing in the knot joy.

When you mentioned these, I had to hit froogle to look for them. Something like these (http://store.yahoo.com/campingsurvival/knotplaycarl.html) or something different?

I think I need to order a set. I wonder if I should order a set for this journal's owner too...

[identity profile] wispfox.livejournal.com 2004-05-14 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the journal's owner wouldn't mind. ;)

Then I guess I'll do my part by mailing you the rope to practice with, or something.

Or, y'know, bringing it with you for the June party! ;)

Okay. I'll buy two sets then. Well, probably more since I know some people around here that would like them.

Ooooh! ooooh! I'd love to see it....

[identity profile] wispfox.livejournal.com 2004-05-13 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmm. I can attempt to remember to bring it to next work group. :)

Hey, weren't you asking me a question last group which I never answered?

My Healing Touch mentorship students took me to high tea at the Ritz Carlton in Boston when our year was done, and there was a harpist there. I loved it. There is something just *wondermous* about the sound of a harp, be it large or small.

I've played lorelei's harp ... and even though I had never played before, it still sounded very beautiful. Everone else seemed to like it a lot. I had played for about an hour. It was very very relaxing. :)

I should learn to tie a wide variety of knots.

*grin*

I could teach you some fun knots... we might need to find someone to demonstrate them with though, for you to properly learn them.

My dad was a knot tier coming from him being a sailor. He had my making lanyards from when I was very very small, I am just about to braid Josh a wrist knot.
He always had a copy of The Marlinspike Sailor (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0070592187/qid=1084466541/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-3199288-0658300?v=glance&s=books) that he would make wonderful rope decorations.

We have this book (http://www.greenerypress.com/ebh.htm) that has a variety of different knots in it. There is a certain underlying agenda to the knots though.
