Is it disturbing that I try to refer to people on LJ, in non-LJ contexts, as ‹lj user=username›? Not just by their username, but by trying to use lj-specific html.

*shakes head at self*

Do you mean, is it disturbing to people who know that you do disturbing things?

No.

*blinks* Oh! You're searching/replacing _your_ comment.

Less confused now.

And yes, I suppose, 'duh'. :)

not to me..

[identity profile] majes.livejournal.com 2004-02-18 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That happens to me in dreams sometimes. Not that this should comfort you... I have weird dreams. I used to have dreams in Pascal when I was in college. I think its called "too much immersion". Last night, I had a dream that was a mix of canasta and story writing. *shrug*

[identity profile] wispfox.livejournal.com 2004-02-18 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
See, my dreams do that kind of thing all the time. That's not strange to me. Dreams are *supposed* to be weird. *shrug*

Hey - at least I haven't dreamed about bugzilla. At least that I remember.

I dream in LJ all the time. Which, frankly, is an improvement over dreaming in Usenet, because the colors are nicer.

Y'know, I never thought about that. But you're *so* right!

Dreaming in Usenet is strange. :)

Agh! Don't remind me! I'd almost forgotten.

[identity profile] treacle-well.livejournal.com 2004-02-18 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I do that too.

And I don't find it disturbing that you do.

Wee! lj-specific html in people's *brains*!

[identity profile] wurmwyd.livejournal.com 2004-02-18 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi There!

I still use the lj tags in chat windows. I know it doesn't make the little hyperlink with the head next to it, but I do it anyway. Maybe someday AIM will recognize LJ usernames!! :D (since I'm convinced that lj is taking over the world)

A friend of mine ([livejournal.com profile] alcestis -- See I did it again!)and I have decided that making the "brackets" sign in the air (holding your hands up facing each other like two opposing Pac-Men) while saying the person's username is the correct way to identify an lj user in verbal communication.

*laughs* I like. I may not remember, but I like. :)

Hi there!

When I eventually meet you, (and I WILL!!) I'll be sure to use the brackets sign when mentioning any mutal lj-personnages.

[identity profile] wispfox.livejournal.com 2004-02-18 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
and I WILL!!

Certain of that, are you?

*grins* Y'know, with that kind of statement, I am half tempted to try to work against that idea. ;)

be sure to use the brackets sign when mentioning any mutal lj-personnages.

That'll help!

You could do that, but how can you work against your burning desire for me?

I'm very confident in myself all of the sudden!! [grin!]

Hi there!

When I eventually meet you, (and I WILL!! muahahahahaha!!) I'll be sure to use the brackets sign when mentioning any lj-personnages in conversation.

[identity profile] australian-joe.livejournal.com 2004-02-18 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I have heard people signify LJ usernames in speech by saying "blah blah blah buttplug australian_joe."

"Sorry?!"

"Buttplug! You know, the little icon you get before someone's LJ username? It looks like a buttplug!"

"[splutter]"

(But it does, and that's how I've thought of it ever since.)

[identity profile] wispfox.livejournal.com 2004-02-18 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Um. Oh, *my*. It's a good thing that's not how the html looks! :)

[identity profile] wispfox.livejournal.com 2004-02-19 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
*chuckles* That's not _nearly_ as entertaining for people who aren't getting the text version of that comment. :)

I wasn't sure if it would be masked out. Heh.

Whoa! TMI!

(... do buttplugs normally make you do that?!?)

[identity profile] sandhawke.livejournal.com 2004-02-18 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Sigh.

It would be nice if HTML had had a feature where if you left out the "a" text, it would fill in the title from the named thing. Then we could use something like <a href="http://wispfox.livejournal.com"/>, which would be standard and nice.

I'm generally not sure what to make of LJ's ... standards compliance.

My general issue is how to avoid people being trapped by LJ. I can't move my journal off LJ without giving up.... what? At my own site, (1) I couldn't use LJ's authentication of people, and (2) people couldn't subscribe nicely to my journal in their LJ friends list (essentially an RSS aggregator) because LJ's RSS import implementation is broken for off-site feeds. (2) could easily be fixed, and I have a plan for (1).....
