[phone] PSA

Had my phone replaced last night because its power button was being flaky. However, apparently they got a digit wrong.

I'm working on getting it fixed, but it does mean that anyone who's tried to call me in the last 24 hours (and anyone who tries until I get it fixed) won't get me.

I only even know because I apparently have someone else's phone number, so people trying to call this person keep getting me...

*sigh*

On the phone with my provider right now; apparently the serial number they had was wrong... working on it.

This is one of the advantages of GSM. I have a chip in my phone that keeps my phone number and my address book. If I need a different phone, I just put the chip in and that's all transferred. I still wonder why the U.S. hasn't moved to all GSM phones.

because that would be smart, and phone companies aren't smart.

I read an article on the topic sometime in the last year or so. In Scientific American I think. The root cause is that telecom costs are much lower here in the US. It takes longer for the carriers to recoup their investment in the established network infrastructure and what not. The US carriers roll out the newer technologies at a slower rate as older equipment gets closer to the end of its life. Smart cards are also slow to get any market here for the same reason.

Hmm. Perhaps when I replace my phone next I shall have to investigate this...

Of course, the real question is if I'll remember!

If you mention that you're thinking of replacing your phone, I'll be sure and mention it.

I was going to say "... WTF?" but then other comments made it clear this isn't GSM.

Uh, ok.

Kinda boggled, but ok.
