Today, the song "Cold Missouri Waters" is haunting my brain. Gonna have to listen to it off of _Cry, Cry, Cry_ when I leave work, I think...

I want the sun to escape the clouds that have hidden it for the past three days. I miss it. And I'm getting cranky because it's missing (ok, technically, I was getting cranky _yesterday_ because it was missing. Today, I'm already cranky).

Have you ever read Young Men and Fire, the book that song is based on? It is beautiful and awful. Web Dodge was a true hero, and he died way too young.

I have not! Perhaps I should add it to my insane list of things to read. :)

I recommend it. McLean was a superb writer, so his prose is worth reading anyway. The specific story of how the smokejumpers lost their lives, and the long, long subsequent effort to improve the art of early fire containment is just amazing to read. When you get to the very last chapter, and realize that McLean knew the book would not be published until after his death, it'll put a lump in your throat.

I, who once fought wildfire in my youth, have written this fire report...

It's beautiful. It's terrible. It's American literature at its best.
