Errands, plus unexpectedness

Got many errands done, but on the way to the post office to mail boxes home, a car and my car collided. We suspect it's due to a third car having moved out of the way of blocking the side of the road I was turning onto, so that the car & I collided. Neither of us saw the other until we collided, but as both of us had been stopped, it was not horrid. Police report filed, which I will try to get tomorrow, or have them send it to me, as I apparently only needed the number for insurance and rental place, not a hard copy. Called insurance, who will be calling me back again tomorrow (national branch was open, but local was not). Called rental car company, and filled out their form from the glove box. The car makes unpleasant scraping noises when I turn or go over a bump, so methinks an exchange in Flagstaff will happen.

But! Ice, groceries, and much post office stuff done. Also, I got a damn cheap coffee maker to boil water for when I'm in a hotel and not camping.

I should figure out what. I'm doing tomorrow night!

Also, I need better ziplocks

These generic ones are hard to close and not watertight (are any?). Soggy cheese is gross. Seriously.

That ongoing oil spill...

So, my worst fears at this point, considering the rate at which the spill is worstening and the apparent inability to do anything about it, is no ocean life worldwide, and this generation being the last to have clean ocean beaches or any experience of sealife outside of aquariums.

I am most afraid of the fact that I can't tell, from any news source, if this is actually unrealistic. Do they know how much oil that well holds, in the case that it can't be stopped?

Mew.

Random weird driving things

I am often pleasently surprised by streets, even little ones, having labels.

75mph typical speed limits on interstates outside of city limits. 65 in cities, usually.

Non-city streets with 65 mph speed limits outside cities.

Needing to use my brights to drive at night.

Excellent signage.

Historic markers. As far as I can tell, every town has one, plus lots others between towns.

Cattle guards.

Cities spreading out, not up (this is a thing I _really_ like).

Large stretches with no buildings at all.

I like people

It is generally true that my default setting is to like people. I suspect it is that genuine liking and interest that make a trip like this possible. I _care_, and so people are generally good to me, and care about me.

I would probably not be happy on this trip if I disliked people, but at the same time I have no doubt that a very different type of road trip could be done by someone who did not generally like people.

I am glad that the sun has meant there is not even a hint of a problem due to lack of lightbox, since it was not really feasible for a roadtrip to bring it.

I sometimes think that my major drive is to share the beauty & joy that I see or experience. It would certainly explain my need to travel and do new and interesting things. It would also explain my periodic startlement at not having anyone to share fleeting things with. Camera & livejournal is certainly a good approximation, which is much of why I am driven to write every night, and upload pictures when I can. I want to share all this with you, even if only through a rough approximation thereof.

The idea of my life goal being at least in part to share beauty warms me.

Random driving all day thoughts

Brilliant green grass like that seen in pictures of Ireland is as dramatically out of place here as it was during my visits to Australia.

Heat-based water mirages make it look like the road ahead was eaten by The Nothing when going uphill with nothing between the road and sky, and the sun behind a cloud.

There are many well-placed restrooms along my trip.

Gas in the middle of nowhere is astoundingly overpriced.

Ok, 40 more miles to go.

Did not drive through roswell, although I did pass it.

Night before...

I find it very difficult to sleep the night before embarking on a trip involving many things I have wanted to do for years, for which some pieces have been in some form of embryonic planning stage for years.

Excited/hopeful, mostly, and nervous/scared in there too. Quite tired, of course.

I had a taste of missing [livejournal.com profile] metahacker tonight while cuddling. There was a distinct thought of 'I will miss this, right here. Very much.'

I will certainly miss the kitty, of course.

And the time off has given me far more interaction with [livejournal.com profile] galaneia with which to appreciate and therefore miss her.

People I do not see every day will take longer to miss. But I'm sad I did not see [livejournal.com profile] hfcougar today before she vannished. I'm sure I'll have times of thinking of [livejournal.com profile] jasra, esp in Colorado.

The month between work and leaving was needful, as were the few days at the meditation retreat, the first thing in my list of things I've wanted to do for years that I recently did.

Also, still no data from Brandeis.

Now, meditate until I sleep, or until I give up. Being too warm is probably not helping.

Picky cat is picky!

Pet Promise no longer making pet food is problematic with a picky cat who believes his current dry food attempt is Not Food.

Really cat, we're trying! We didn't want Pet Promise food to go away, either.

Ah, overtired puppy

I don't want to move because it might wake the puppy, who was a lot of effort to convince to sleep!

Ah, baby animals. :)

Thankfully, my laptop was in the room, and [livejournal.com profile] deyo was able to get it to me with the puppy remaining willing to sleep.

Mmm. Party

There were more people I knew well than i'm used to, and therefore there was more cuddling. I really do like having the opportunity and comfort level to cuddle with multiple people.

Quite tired, but yay cuddly people. I need to remember to specifically set aside time to cuddle people when I visit them or they visit me!

Thanksgiving

We spent the long weekend w/[livejournal.com profile] metahacker's mom, [livejournal.com profile] canuckmum, and do thanksgiving (observed) plus birthday stuff for multiple people w/his family.

Was a very busy weekend, unfortunately involving giving my cold to both [livejournal.com profile] metahacker and [livejournal.com profile] galaneia, the latter of whom is now miserable.

I was quite nervous about my first thanksgiving with his family. It went well, though. Long day. Very long day! But there were tasty foods (I now want a recipe for sweet potato pie, even though I will probably fail to ever make it. It was so tasty!), many conversations and helping with necessary big groups of people chores, and a large variety of presents. Including for me, to my surprise. (to be fair, i did have a birthday recently) I got a broomstick skirt from his mom (I have a fair number of said, so if that was a guess, it was an _excellent_ guess), a couple pieces of nifty art from [livejournal.com profile] metahacker (I did know I was getting something unclear and possibly card-like from him), and a lovely knit lap blanket from [livejournal.com profile] galaneia which I must post pictures of. Although I'm not sure the colors will photograph well.

I'm really impressed with the sneakiness with which she got me to pick a pattern for it! Neat viney plant growing pattern thing! Sneaky girl is sneaky!

I did notice she was knitting a bunch, but she knits a bunch anyway. And I did notice that she wanted to finish something in time for gift giving, and she jumped a few times when I came into a room unexpectedly, but at no point did I ever more than briefly wonder why. Nor did I have any clue what she was making.

Ok, yes, I'm perhaps a bit oblivious. :)

Good thanksgiving. People are still clearly a bit baffled by the whole situation, but they are also clearly trying to actually get to know me. Which is good. :)

Ow

Oh, right. Mirena stops being hormonally useful end of may. And so, I now am forceably reminded of how much my cramps suck when not on the pill and actually happening. There's a reason I pretty much begged to keep it in after my tubes were tied!

This _would_ be a day I need to walk a lot.

*whimpers* At least I figured it out while I still had easy access to alieve! Now, it needs to kick in.

And... My evening plans fall through

Bus drivers that don't stop make catching a bus difficult. Taking too long to realize that they did try to stop for you halfway through an intersection and you have significant trouble walking in front of cars at a green light is just frustrating. And I do poorly at arriving at a recurring event late, so not trying the next bus, and voicemail message left for the only person to whom this would have mattered.

It's hard enough (but usually worthwhile) to psych myself up to go to new social things without my transportation leaving me behind. Ah, well. Will try next week and see what I can do to be a lot more obviously waiting (I was sitting & reading until the bus was nearby, and I doubt people are usually there at that time) next time.

Still absurdly frustrated/upset, though, all out of proportion to what happened, or I might have tried to push past the significant extra difficulty involved in arriving late (and in a place I do not know). Instead, I hide until I calm down. Then, I don't know what. Having my plans change on me last minute isn't a thing I am terribly good at handling.

Omg long commute!

From the intersection of 495 & 3 to exit 32 in westford should not take 55 minutes. Not at work yet, and it's already tripled my normal commute length. Sheesh! Hey, at least my hair has dried from post swim shower.

Wish i knew what's making my commute so bad, though, since I'm still in stop & go and off the highway.

[edited to add: Co-worker sent mail to say that there are multiple accidents on 495N & 495S and 110 has a bus stuck coming out of the Mobil gas station parking lot blocking traffic.]

Health.sleep, health.headaches

Sometimes headaches are very strange things. The ones I get when I sleep poorly are the strangest I ever get. They pretend to be sinuses, but migrane meds are the only thing that touches them.

Today, though, the pain was confusing and not only pain. True, there's pain, and a lot of it. But there's also... A discomnnect between my eyes and my brain, completely screwing with my hand-eye coordination and making reading actively difficult. It's like things simply are not where they appear to be.

If I weren't also light sensitive and in a fair bit of pain, this would be entertaining in its strangeness.

At least my mood has lifted from this morning's, many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] metahacker.

Climbing

Sometimes I think the most important thing my mom ever told me was that if you can climb up, you can climb back down. Very important for a growing kid to know, and it seems like so few do. Sure, she would stay nearby, but it was _my_ job to get back down. And I did.

(no subject)

I have no shoes, a park with a nice stream, lovely trails, and lots of trees.

Ok, the no shoes is because I needed to escape the neighbor vaccuming his porch Right Now. And my feet are not up to walking on pebbles.

But good park, even with Mosquitos which seem to be everywhere anyway!
