The cat one is ragingamazon's cat, Jackie O. Jackie, upon examining my three suitcases, decided that they were where she wanted to live. The whole month I was there she would surreptitiously climb into one or the other and then look at me pitifully when I found her and took her out.
As for the elephant one, yes, he is painting a picture. There's an elephant hospital/reservation near ragingamazon's house and to raise money for it they put on shows where the elephants demonstrate how awesome they are. By doing stuff like painting and playing instruments. It was pretty incredible.
