I don't know if you read much but if you do, pick up a copy of Nicholson Baker's A Box of Matches (http://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/biblio?inkey=4-0375502874-0). It's largely about a man and about 25 days from his life during middle age and some rather poignant moments of the midlife crisis, but approached from a different perspective than most. He fears not the loss of his youth but the loss of the life he has at the moment, which he loves despite its flaws and day to day mundanity. It's told in short segments that reflect his thouhts each morning before the rest of his family wakes up, while he sits in the kitchen in front of a fire and drinks his coffee.
