Agreed. However, Massachusetts has special "camper" plates, most likely so they can charge an extra leg to the arm and leg registration already costs. I have seen these both on self-propelled dwellings as well as the trailer variety. I have also seen trailer plates on the trailer variety, and other plates on the self-propelled variety. Probably to avoid having to spend the extra leg in Massachusetts. :)
My dictionary (American Heritage) mostly concurs. The difference is that it says that RV is an umbrella term encompassing both campers and motor homes. It also says that a camper can be either a trailer or a rear compartment of a vehicle, whereas a motor home is itself a vehicle. Most people I know would, like you, say RV instead of motor home.
Just to confuse you, in Australia, "camper vans" are big bubble-top vans with beds in the back. Go figure ;-)
Well, I didn't have one, but they're not that big --I imagine there's some tiny amount of storage and beds that either just stay flat in back or fold up to the walls.
Two things I think you'd miss in them: water and propane. Eating out every meal gets spendy (and, suprisingly, not fun) pretty fast :)
My answer is pretty similar to Volta's. An RV has a motor and such while a camper has to be pulled by something. I've also heard of campers as generally being smaller. An Airstream or similar is probably still an RV even though it's towed.
