I may have (have had?) snail leeches. There were snails in there, too, but then I removed them. Possibly removing the typical food source of the leeches, causing them to attack the shrimp.

As far as I can tell, snail leeches don't lay eggs, as they host their babies on their bodies. So if that's what they were, and I manage to get them all, then the shrimps are safe. Wonder if the snails I have were carrying them (they can)!

Really hard to be sure, but I'm hopeful. And betta _love_ leeches. And planaria. And apparently anything that will fit in their mouths. :)
